THE RICH HISTORY OF HOTEL DU CAP-EDEN-ROC

Giants of literature, old Hollywood movies, painters, and more have used the hotel as their sun-kissed home away from home for 150 years.

Hotel Du Cap-Eden-Roc

Since the 1870s, the opulent Hotel du Cap-Eden Roc in Antibes, France, has presided over the rocky Côte d'Azur, entertaining luminaries like Hemingway, Picasso, Liz 'n Dick, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. It was immortalised as the Hotel des Étrangers in the novel Tender Is the Night. Scott's friends Gerald and Sara Murphy, the models for Dick and Nicole Diver, once rented the hotel for the entire summer, luring fellow countrymen like the Fitzgeralds, Ernest Hemingway, and Pablo Picasso into their magnetic orbit. Since Scott's time, the world's most affluent have flocked to Hotel du Cap. Of course, in today's world, the hotel is constantly full during the summer and the Cannes Film Festival makes it seem like the world revolves around it.

The hotel has managed to maintain a welcoming aura of informality despite its acknowledged reputation for hosting enormously famous guests (and for commanding similarly astronomical accommodation fees during peak season).

Numerous romantic relationships took place at the Hotel du Cap, most famously one between a movie star and a Kennedy

Marlene Dietrich had quite a number of relationships during the course of the two seasons (of many) that she stayed at the Hotel du Cap in the late 1930s. The German-American movie legend checked into the hotel in the summer of 1938 along with her husband, their daughter Maria, her husband's mistress, and her own boyfriend, author Erich Maria Remarque. Dietrich then met Joe Kennedy's eyes, who was on vacation from his position as an ambassador in England with his wife Rose and their nine children (second sibling JFK was 21 at the time). He started frequenting the actress's cabana on the beach.
