THE NOSTALGIC GLAMOUR OF EDEN ROC MIAMI
The iconic Eden Roc Miami Beach, built in 1955 by renowned architect Morris Lapidus, adds an abundance of nostalgic glamour to the contemporary beachfront resort experience.
The Grand opening
When the Eden Roc first opened its doors in 1955, there was a lot of enthusiasm and anticipation. Harry Belafonte, one of the opening performers, sang in the Cafe Pompeii. Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Cab Calloway, Paul Anka, Jerry Lewis, Johnny Mathis, Sammy Davis, Jr., and a long list of other outstanding performers would soon be followed.
The iconic design
Italian Renaissance art and architecture served as a major source of inspiration for Lapidus as he created the Eden Roc's graceful straight lines and smooth faceted shape. Lapidus, a man famous for the adage "too much is never enough," went all out in building the Eden Roc.
Lapidus was informed by hotel owner Harry Mufson that he wanted the establishment to scream luxury. The centrepiece of Lapidus' design, which continues to entice visitors and design fans from all over the world today, is a grand staircase with baroque influences that descends into a circular lobby that is encircled by tall columns made of East Indian rosewood.
The Eden Roc Today
Incorporating three immaculate pools, the Ocean Social restaurant, the Esencia Wellness Spa, and the renowned Nobu Miami Restaurant, Eden Roc now embodies the original designs of Lapidus and the nostalgic glamour of the Old Hollywood era.
Today, all that remains of Eden Roc's outdoor Italian gardens, Harry's American Bar, Villa d'Este Restaurant, multi-leveled cabanas, card games by the pool, underworld characters, and entertainment are fond recollections.
The current Eden Roc, however, still possesses the glitz, panache, and grace that have earned it the title of "Grande Dame" among Miami Beach hotels in the past. The stunning lobby design, the grand front entrance, and the iconic structure atop the hotel emblazoned with "Eden Roc" remaining as a permanent fixture on the Miami Beach skyline all reflect the original architecture, design, and "vision of Italian Renaissance" created by Harry Mufson and Morris Lapidus.
