The Ethicurean Garden Picnics
There are five distinct seasons at The Ethicurean restaurant…Scarcity, Growth, Fruiting, Harvest and Festivity.
February is the season of ‘scarcity’, a time for imagination and creativity. April heralds the season of ‘growth’, when the garden begins to reveal itself for the coming year.
Taste the joys of ‘fruiting’ in June, whilst ‘harvest’ starts to show its riches some time in September (weather depending).
The ‘festive’ season begins in November and comes to a close with the spectacular January Wassail celebration.
The Ethicurean Restaurant within the Barley Wood walled gardens near Bristol, is founded on 'a sense of place'. This is the idea of having a connection with the native land, the community who grow seasonal food upon it, preparations with harmonious flavours and the understanding of its history. In their kitchen garden restaurant respect is given to the local produce grown there and sourced locally by using flavour combinations that have been partners for centuries. They look for ways to update and innovate historical recipes that highlight the bounteous nature of the land.
The Kitchen Garden at Barley Wood dates from 1901 and was constructed for Henry Herbert Wills, director of the Imperial Tobacco Company. Although this was at the end of the Victorian period, the design was typical of earlier Victorian gardens.
From Saturday 4th July The Ethicurean will gradually re-open, beginning with, garden picnics! Bring a rug and dine in the wonderful gardens of Barley Wood, take in the fresh air while eating produce that locally sourced.
