A TRUE WONDER OF THE WORLD
The lost city of petra
The city of Petra, capital of the Nabataean Arabs, is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, it is Located 240 km south of the capital Amman and 120 km north of the red sea town of Aqaba, Petra the world wonder is undoubtedly Jordan's most valuable treasure and greatest tourist attraction, and it is visited by tourists from all over the world.
Quite simply, its breathtaking. The image of the Treasury, famously making an appearance in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade gave it another layer of appeal and it quickly became the flagship image of Petra that is known world wide.
In the Eighth century, an earthquake threw Petra into the rubble where it lay forgotten for centuries while knowledge of its location faded, until Johann Burckhardt, a Swiss adventurer stumbled upon the city in 1812.
The secret of Petra's success was its location, sandwiched between two walls of mountainous rock, with out local knowledge, you couldn't tell that where was an evidence of a city there which was a home to 30000 people.
Petra's only entrance is via a very tall canyon called The Siq which starts at the Dam and ends at the Treasury, a split rock canal with a length of about 1200m and a width of 3 to 12m, and height up to about 80m; most of the rock is natural and another part was sculptured by the Nabataeans. The Siq opens up onto Petra’s most magnificent façade; the Treasury, or Al Khazna.
It is almost 40 meters high and intricately decorated with Corinthian capitals, friezes, figures and more.
The Treasury is crowned by a funerary urn, which according to local legend conceals a pharaoh’s treasure. The Treasury is truly, an amazing sight even though by now you'll be familiar with the iconic image, seeing it in reality does not disappoint.
It represents another time, another world and has a very majestic presence. One of the largest monuments in Petra, yet lesser known, is the Monastery measuring 47m wide by 48.3m high. It was built on a similar model to the Treasury, it was used as a place for the meetings of religious associations around 2AD.
There is a whole hidden city to explore, you need at least 2 days to see everything, the Theatre, the Place of High Sacrifice, Tombs, the Church.. immerse yourself in the forgotten city.
