Greece is a country known for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and ancient ruins. The monasteries of Meteora, which means “suspended in the air” in Greek, were built by monks in the 14th and 15th centuries. At the time, the area was seen as a haven for those seeking isolation and spiritual enlightenment. The monks used a system of pulleys, ropes, and ladders to transport building materials and people up to the top of the rock pillars, where they carved out their monasteries.

Today, there are six active monasteries in Meteora, each one with its unique history and significance. These monasteries are open to the public, and visitors can explore the stunning architecture, intricate frescoes, and rich artefacts that have been preserved for centuries.

But the real adventure begins with the climb up to these monasteries. Several trails and staircases lead up to the top, offering different levels of difficulty for hikers. While some trails are relatively easy, others require a bit more physical exertion and a good amount of stamina.

As you make your way up, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The rock pillars, some reaching up to 400 meters, seem to defy gravity, and the lush green valleys below provide a stark contrast to the rugged terrain.

The climb itself can be a bit challenging, but the feeling of accomplishment when you reach the top is indescribable. You will also have the opportunity to interact with the monks, who are welcoming and eager to share their knowledge and way of life with visitors.

For those who are not able to make the climb, there are also guided tours that take visitors up to the monasteries by car or bus. While this may not offer the same sense of accomplishment, it is still a great way to experience the beauty and history of Meteora.

The food is also a highlight, with traditional Greek dishes made from locally sourced ingredients and served with warm hospitality.
