ALL ABOARD THE INDIAN PACIFIC TRAIN
Australia is a land of breathtaking landscapes, unique wildlife, and vibrant cultures, and one of the best ways to immerse yourself in its diverse beauty is through a rail journey. Among the most iconic train trips in Australia is the Indian Pacific train, which takes passengers on a remarkable four-day adventure across the continent, connecting Sydney in the east to Perth in the west.
Day 1: Journey from Sydney to the Outback of New South Wales
Afternoon
Begin your adventure at Sydney's Central Station, where you'll board your train and settle into your cabin. As you embark on your journey, watch the urban landscape give way to the breathtaking scenery of the Blue Mountains, filled with lush valleys and striking sandstone cliffs. An audio commentary option on the train will enhance your experience as you learn about the sights along the way.
This journey includes an off-train excursion in the Blue Mountains, featuring a visit to the iconic Three Sisters rock formation at Echo Point and a stroll through the dramatic Jamison Valley.
Evening
As twilight descends over the mountain ranges, the scenery shifts to the arid regions of New South Wales, defined by resilient mulga trees and expansive plains. After enjoying a delightful dinner in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant, mingle with fellow travellers over a refreshing drink in the Outback Explorer Lounge.
Day 2: Broken Hill to Adelaide
Morning
Wake up in Broken Hill, a former mining town whose unique desert landscape has inspired countless artists. Take a one-hour walking tour to explore the city’s famous Living Desert Sculptures, followed by a visit to the Pro Hart Gallery, where you'll gain insight into the life and work of one of Australia’s most celebrated artists, known for capturing the essence of the outback.
Afternoon
After lunch on board, the journey continues through South Australia's fertile fields. You can choose from several off-train excursions: spend the afternoon and evening in the scenic Barossa Valley or McLaren Vale wine regions, visit the heritage town of Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills, or enjoy a private guided experience at the South Australian Museum. Each option includes drinks and dinner. Later, everyone reunites on the train in Adelaide to begin the journey across the Nullarbor Plain.
For those on the eastbound service, there’s an option of a morning stop in Adelaide with excursions such as a city sights coach tour, a progressive breakfast at the iconic Adelaide Central Markets, a guided tour of Adelaide Oval, or a city and river precinct walking tour.
Day 3: Crossing the Nullarbor Plain
Morning
Awaken to the stunning and unspoiled beauty of the Nullarbor, aptly named from the Latin meaning "no trees." This immense outback expanse stretches over 200,000 square kilometres (77,000 square miles) through South and Western Australia and is a must-see on any traveller's bucket list. Gaze out at the seemingly infinite stretch of rust-coloured earth punctuated by resilient shrubs.
Afternoon
Upon entering Western Australia, celebrate your crossing of the iconic Nullarbor with a memorable dinner in Rawlinna. Guests have the opportunity to disembark for a traditional long-table dinner beneath the vast outback sky, surrounded by the serene landscape of sprawling sheep stations; the nearest town, Kalgoorlie, is over 400 kilometres (250 miles) away. This alfresco dining experience is sure to be unforgettable.
For those on the Indian Pacific’s eastbound journey, there's a special excursion in the historic gold rush town of Kalgoorlie.
Day 4: From the Outback of Western Australia to Perth
Morning
As the Indian Pacific train continues its journey, the scenery once again changes, revealing the picturesque Avon Valley, characterised by rolling hills and meandering streams. After passing through lush farmlands and perhaps spotting a hot air balloon, the train approaches the city limits of Perth.
Afternoon
Upon your arrival in the west after this epic transcontinental journey, you can choose to be directly transferred to your accommodation or join an optional tour exploring Perth. On this tour, enjoy stunning city views from Kings Park, travel along the Swan River, and see Subiaco's trendy boutiques as well as Claremont’s upscale shopping area featuring the famous Millionaire's Row. You'll also pass landmarks including the WACA Cricket Ground, Town Hall, Perth Mint, Parliament House, Crown Casino, and Barracks Arch.
Perth offers seamless transport options for visiting beautiful Rottnest Island, known for its adorable quokkas, the vibrant culture and art scene in Fremantle, the vineyards of Swan Valley, and Cottesloe Beach, where you can take a refreshing swim in the Indian Ocean.
